My Gear — the most frequently asked question, answered

Every photographer gets asked the same thing: “What camera do you use?” It’s an understandable question, and also slightly beside the point — but I’ll answer it anyway, because gear does matter, even if it’s not the whole story.

The Cameras

My primary body right now is the Sony A7 IV. I came to Sony from Canon a few years back and haven’t looked back. The autofocus is exceptional for both stills and video, and the dynamic range gives me confidence when I’m shooting in tricky light.

The Lenses

I keep it simple: 24mm f/2.8 for landscapes and environmental portraits, 35mm f/1.4 for street, 85mm f/1.8 for portraits and wildlife from a moderate distance, and a 100-400mm for dedicated wildlife work.

What About Your Phone?

I carry a Pixel 8 Pro as my always-there camera. Some of my favourite recent images were shot on it — not despite its limitations, but because of them. Constraints breed creativity.

The truth is, the best camera is the one you have with you, pointed at something worth photographing.
